Beginning in the Academic Year 2008-2009, De Anza College will offer the following certificateor degree options in selected career/occupational areas:
- Certificates of Achievement-Advanced (range of 27 - 45 units) *In extenuating circumstances (e.g. to meet market/industry needs or licensing requirements, vocational programs may go up to a maximum of 60 units).
- Certificates of Achievement (18-26 units only)
- Skills Certificates (certificates that are 17 units or less OR 18-26 unit certificates that are not State-approved). These certificates will not be reviewed by, nor approved by, the State. As such, these certificates MAY NOT be noted on transcripts and departments/divisions will have to devise their own methods for awarding and tracking such certificates.
- Associate degree programs offered at De Anza include both Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees.
In developing degrees and certificates, a ladder structure occurs where units earned in the Certificate of Achievement should apply toward the Certificate of Achievement-Advanced and A.A. or A.S. Degree in the same program. Often the units earned in a Skills Certificate will apply toward the Certificate of Achievement or Certificate of Achievement-Advanced. Sometimes, however, the Skills Certificate units are specifically and solely aimed at meeting re-certification and re-licensure of individuals to continue practicing their professions after having already earned a degree or certificate.
When developing certificates and degrees, please keep the following in mind:
- It is recommended that the A.A. or A.S. Degree requirements consist only of additional units beyond the Certificate of Proficiency units.
- It is recommended that all degree requirements include a statement that major courses count/apply towards GE requirements.
